The name Dobbs has a rich and ancient history. It is an Anglo-Saxon name that was originally derived from Robert. Dobb was a diminutive of the name Robert in the Middle Ages; is has changed since
then to the modern form Bob. First found in Lancashire where they held a family seat from very early times. Dobbs stems from the medieval pet name of Dobbe, a form of Robert that was popular in Lancashire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, and Yorkshire during the 13th century. When the letter S is added, it indicates the son of Dobbs. The family had its seat in Lancashire, England. Dobbs family history shows the first recorded spelling is Reginald Dobbe in the Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire, England, in 1275.

John Pittard Dobbs Father of Tera Jane Dobbs Bryson 2G Grandfather to Peggy Donegan Snipes June 1, 1837 in Illinois - May 2, 1910 The 1850 United States Federal Census shows John living with his family in Shawneetown, Gallatin, Illinois. The household includes: Lodaway, Milly, James, John, William, Howell, Fransina, and Thomas. He was probably living here when he joined the Union Army. In LeGrange, Kentucky in February of 1863, he was thrown from a horse and broke 4 ribs. The injuries to his chest were permanent. John married Miss Mary Campbell on May 10, 1867 in Cannon County, Tennessee. The 1900 United States Federal Census shows John and his family living in Civil District 1 of Cannon County, Tennessee. He is listed as a farmer. He lists himself as being from Tennessee, his father from Georgia and his mother born in North Carolina. Elbern Reed, 20, from Tennessee is also listed living with the family as a hired hand. Their children as as follows: Jessie Howell Dobbs
born: October 20, 1884 married: Philana Milligan description: medium height, slender build, brown eyes and black hair children: Verda Mae, Thomas Howell, Lester, Raymond Hubert, Lura Alene, Edward Howard, Palmer Forest, Thelma "Minnie" Norene, James Roy died: April 27, 1964 Pernisia Dobbs born: married: children: died: |
He shows up on the 1910 United States Federal Census at 72, living in Civil District 1 of Cannon County, Tennessee. His daughter, Terah Jane, lives next door with her husband, Cleve, and 3 of their children, on Lox Creek Road. His son, Jesse, also lives near with his wife, daughter, and a boarder. John was a farmer. He was baptized in the Stones River and a member of the Woodbury Baptist Church of Christ in 1893.
He enlisted as a private with the Union Army into Company L, 6th Regiment, Illinois Voluntary Calvary on December 15, 1862 and discharged in Selma, Alabama on November 5, 1865. He also rode with the 3rd Mounted Infantry in Alabama. The Illinois Voluntary Calvary did most of their fighting in middle Tennessee, including: Shelbyville, Collierville, Lawrenceburg, Franklin and Pulaski.
1862 - 1865 John served in the Union army fighting in Middle Tennessee. On May 5, 1898, he applied for his pension from the war. His grand daughter, Elizabeth Bryson Allen; said he 'swum' the Tennessee River.
He is rumored to have ridden with the Jesse James Gang using Dobbs Hollow in Readyville (then known as Braxton), Tennessee. This seems unlikely since it is known that Jesse James hated Union soldiers, having killed some even after the war because of their affiliation. However, Jesse did have a home in Tennessee. Verbatim Per Time Life Books, The Old West, Gunfighters: ‘For everyday living the brothers chose Nashville, Tennessee. Jesse and his wife rented a house on Boscobel Street in East Nashville, where he was known as J.D. Howard and thought to be a wheat speculator. As B. J. Woodson, Frank lived with his wife on a small farm nearby.’
John’s second wife was Fannie Curlee Tenpenny. There were no children from this marriage. John died on May 2, 1910 and is buried in the Gaither / Ready Cemetery, Bryson Hollow, Locke Creek Road, Readyville, Tennessee. His wife, Mary Ann, is shown on the stone, but there is no date of death. |

So, OUR Mary Stewart would have to have been from a later descendant and being more than a 5th generation...The Mary Stewart from 1380-1426 married a Kennedy ) Princess Mary Stewart (1380-1456) m Sir James Kennedy (1376-1408) Their children would have to be where the connection is. John Dobbs~
9th G Grandfather of Peggy Donegan Snipes
Born in 1575 in SCOTLAND ?
Died~1622
He was married to Margaret Dalway 1603 Ireland
She died November 6, 1620
Emigration: 1595, London to Carrickfergus.
Occupation: Soldier.
They had the following children:
Foulk Dobbs
Hercules Dobbs 1613
He married an heiress (only child of the Dalways) seven years later and built a castle on their land.
(The estate was established in the 1596 when a young John Dobbs accompanied Sir Henry ]Dockwra to Carrickfergus as an army officer. Dobbs subsequently became Dockwra's deputy as Treasurer of Ulster. John Dobbs was the grandson of Sir Richard Dobbs, Lord Mayor of London in 1551 and a founder of Christ's Hospital London. A title would never appear in the Dobbs lineage again.)
The Dalway lands were a grant from King James I. Dalway granted a freehold lease to his son-in-law John Dobbs and his bride, Margaret. They settled comfortably into life in their newly built Castle Dobbs on the Dalway estate and served as Mayor of Carrickfergus and High Sheriff of County Antrim.
Everything was fine until the death of Dalway's first wife. John Dalway remarried a widow named Jane Norton, and, as sometimes happens, Margaret Dobbs was destined to quarrel with her new Stepmother. This resulted in the second wife prevailing on her husband to make a new will in favour of a nephew.
John Dalway’s death in 1618 signaled the beginning of a protracted legal battle in which John and Margaret Dobbs claimed the estate on behalf of their son Foulk. At the first hearing, the court ruled in favor of John and Margaret, but their opponents challenged this ruling. In consequence, John and son Foulk set off to London to petition the King and succeeded in obtaining His Majesty’s Grant to the lands of the late John Dalway.
An unfortunate tragedy befell the pair on their return journey, and both John Dobbs and his son Foulk were drowned at sea, when their ship perished off the bar at Chester in the year 1622. In consequence, the legal confrontation continued in the name of the younger brother Hercules. The law suit was eventually settled when referees appointed by the Lord Chancellor ruled that Hercules Dobbs be awarded the lands at Castle Dobbs and Ballynure, and the rights to tenement in Carrickfergus. The remainder of the estate was awarded to Dalway’s nephew.

Lord Mayor of London, Richard Dobbs; 1551-1552
Christ’s Hospital in London was the result of the vision of King Edward VI, assisted by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, and Sir Richard Dobbs, Lord Mayor of London. Its genesis was the earlier dissolution of the monasteries and the resultant overflow onto the streets of the poor and destitute.
Sir Richard's will, May 11, 1556, as follows:
"Sir Richard Dobbs, Lord Mayor of London, and one of the founders of Christ's Hospital, was, by his own statement a native of Cliffe." The hamlet must have looked upon his career with just pride. The following extracts from his will are full of interest: -
